Member Spotlight: Stephen Gabriel

Member Spotlight: Stephen Gabriel

Who are you and what is your role?

I’m Stephen Gabriel, Chief Executive and Returning Officer at Tamworth Borough Council. I’ve worked in local government since June 1989, serving communities through roles in Birmingham, Sandwell, Oxford, Malvern Hills, Wychavon and Tamworth. My role is to provide strategic leadership for the council, support elected members and help shape a thriving future for the borough.

What attracted you to work in local government?

What attracted me was the opportunity to make a visible difference in people’s lives. Local government is where policy becomes reality, and throughout my career I’ve been motivated by the chance to improve places, support communities and see the direct impact of public service.

What challenges do you face in local government?

Having worked in local government since 1989, I believe we are at one of the most pivotal points in history. Councils are managing financial pressures, rising demand and major reforms through devolution and local government reorganisation. The challenge is leading through change while continuing to deliver excellent services for residents.

What do you value most about APSE membership/events/services?

APSE provides invaluable opportunities to learn from peers, shape ideas and access practical insight from across local government. I particularly value the way it brings together expertise and innovation to help councils improve services and outcomes for residents.

Share something you like most about living/working in your local council area.

Tamworth combines a proud heritage with a strong sense of community and ambition for the future. What I enjoy most is the pride people have in their town and the willingness of residents businesses, partners and community groups to work together to make Tamworth an even better place.
