North Yorkshire Council has set out plans to safeguard and strengthen trees and woodland across the county through its proposed Tree and Woodland Policy.
The policy seeks to introduce a countywide approach to tree management, establishing clear and consistent standards across North Yorkshire.
Under the proposals, stronger protections would be put in place to prevent the unnecessary loss of trees and green spaces. Developers would also face increased expectations to retain existing trees and hedgerows as part of new schemes, while the council would make greater use of Tree Preservation Orders to safeguard valued landscapes.
The policy recognises the vital role trees play in supporting wildlife, tackling climate change and improving people’s quality of life. If adopted, the policy will support long-term efforts to increase tree cover and ensure North Yorkshire’s green spaces continue to benefit both the environment and local communities.
