Redditch Borough Council is set to introduce a new pet cremation service at Abbey Crematorium.
With the number of pet owners on the rise since the pandemic, the new service taps into a growing ‘pet funeral market’. The council is expected to raise £7000 a week from pet cremations, with a total of £50,000 invested for the installation of the service.
Abbey Crematorium will offer pet cremations as a standalone service with different entrances, specialist equipment and carefully scheduled timings to ensure they are kept separate from human cremations at the site.
The introduction of the service comes ten years after Britain’s first council-led pet cremation service was opened by Barnsley Council in 2016.
The service is expected to launch in the Autumn, with capacity for up to 35 pet cremations available per week.
