Newry, Mourne and Downe District Council transitions fleet from diesel to biofuel

Newry, Mourne and Downe District Council have transitioned their vehicle fleet from diesel to an environmentally friendly biofuel mix.

The fleet will be powered by Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HGVO), a renewable source which can be mixed with the council’s existing diesel stock. By transitioning from diesel to the biofuel mix, the council will reduce carbon emissions by almost 2,500 tonnes annually.

The transition marks an important step in the council’s decarbonisation journey, with more electric vehicles set to be introduced. The council aims to introduce 17 zero emission light vehicles this year with proposals in place for all small vehicles under 3.5 tonnes to be carbon neutral by 2035.
