Dedicated to putting together all the sector updates, good practice, case studies, upcoming events and training all in one place – we hope you enjoy it, and your feedback is always welcome.
It has been a busy year so far supporting our authorities with all the Simpler Recycling changes and meeting with various government departments while organising our own events and attending many others. You can read more about what I have been up to here.
I look forward to meeting you next week in Sheffield for our annual Waste and Recycling Seminar, now at a bigger and better venue, at Sheffield Town Hall, just round the corner from the Crucible, so don’t snooker yourself by not booking a place and leaving it too late!

Deposit Return Scheme Approved in Wales
The Welsh government’s recent approval of a Deposit Return Scheme marks a significant step towards a circular economy and reduced litter.
ASPE recommends that all councils are fully informed and consulted on the progress of the introduction of Deposit Return Schemes.

Digital Waste Tracking
The Environment Agency hosted a webinar last month aimed at Local Authorities, outlining the new policy and requirements which will come into force from October 2026 for receiving site operators in England/Wales/NI, and January 2027 in Scotland.

Working with PackUK
APSE has had several productive meetings with the PackUK team to discuss EPR. PackUK is also gathering good news stories from local authorities about their plans for pEPR funding. This is an opportunity to highlight planned improvements to waste services and infrastructure.

Spotlight on Derby’s Food Waste Rollout
Our very own APSE Associate, Craig Denmark, was interviewed by BBC Local Radio in Derby on the successful rollout of separate food waste collections on time by the 31 March deadline.

Take Charge in Glasgow
Glasgow launched a battery recycling campaign to protect waste services from fire risk. Arising from an increase in fires in RCVs, the Take Charge Campaign aims to educate the public on correct disposal of batteries.

Cornwall Council’s Food for Thought Campaign
Genevra Fletcher, Marketing and Campaigns Officer at Cornwall Council, explains how the Council is empowering people to make big savings at the checkout with small changes in the kitchen – changes that happen to cut food waste, too.

Mid Ulster Council Tops the Table in Northern Ireland
Mid Ulster District Council achieved the highest recycling rate in Northern Ireland at 63%, also putting the authority amongst some of the best UK-wide too. This represented a further increase from last year’s rate of 59.3% which was already the highest in NI. They presented on this achievement at our Northern Ireland AGM held at Lagan Valley Island last month.

Enhancing Income and Waste Service Delivery
APSE Associates are currently supporting commercial and trade waste teams across two authorities in the North West and Yorkshire.
Our experienced Associates are reviewing how these services operate, helping them strengthen income generation, streamline processes, and enhance overall service delivery. As part of this work, they are also identifying and celebrating areas of strong performance within each team.

Supporting Scotland’s Waste Services
As part of APSE’s ongoing support to Scottish authorities, one of our Associates recently completed a comprehensive review of a council’s waste services.
This included assessing the current “as is” position, identifying opportunities for efficiencies, and offering an independent perspective on how processes could be improved. The findings informed a second phase of work, providing clear guidance on how the service could move forward.
