APSE Principal Advisor Bonni Jee on our new Waste Bulletin

APSE Principal Advisor Bonni Jee on our new Waste Bulletin

Welcome to the first ever edition of the APSE Waste Bulletin - dedicated to putting together all the sector updates, good practice, case studies and upcoming events and training all in one place - we hope you enjoy it, and your feedback is always welcome.

It has been a busy start to the year for us just as it has been for you all with the introduction of Simpler Recycling and food waste collections. The APSE team and I have been meeting with Defra, PackUK, the EA, DESNZ, WISH and other associations on these issues so that we are on the same page and representing your interests where possible. We are in the loop with regular meetings with most of these bodies.

Last month, I was in Leeds for a Defra/DESNZ ETS workshop with local authorities which was really insightful to hear about councils’ concerns, and brainstorm how we can be best prepared for when EfW comes into scope from 2028. I also attended our Energy event in Nottingham visiting the council’s depot – a pioneering example of a majority-electric fleet: from RCVs to vans and a fully in-house workshop.

Our two network webinars earlier this year in the run up to Simpler Recycling, covering Food Waste and the Material Changes, were attended by well over 100 authorities each. Keep your eyes peeled for further webinars throughout the year.

Earlier in the year, I supported the Defra Change Network by being a guest presenter in showcasing our Training offer – from Health and Safety to LGR. I was also honoured to be invited by CIWM to be part of a webinar on the local authority landscape. Our Fuelling Concerns survey to our Transport Network showed the impact of the fuel price rises on local authority fleet which will no doubt have a knock-on effect on waste service delivery costs.

Don’t forget that we at APSE are your one-stop shop for the frontline – from waste to fleet and transport, which is now more intertwined with waste services than ever – given the challenges of fleet procurement and decarbonisation, to training, data benchmarking, to consultancy and interim management and LGR, we have you covered. We are here for you, so why go elsewhere?

In the meantime though I look forward to meeting you next week in Sheffield for our annual Waste Seminar, now at a bigger and better venue, this time at Sheffield Town Hall, just round the corner from the Crucible, so don’t snooker yourself by not booking a place and leaving it too late!

Best wishes,

Bonni
