Reducing Overheating in UK buildings - A Guide for Local Authorities

This summer has been unprecedented in terms of high temperatures and the duration of heat waves in the UK. This won’t come as a surprise to anyone interested in our changing climate who will understand the potential impacts of weather extremes in terms of health, death rates, food production, water availability and energy systems. Further impacts are being felt across local authority building estate’s many of which were built decades ago and so not designed for current nor future extreme weather events – in other words, overheating could become a regular occurrence with effects on staff, service users and the delivery of services.  Overheating is a core estate management issue to be ranked alongside health and safety, emergency planning and service continuity.

This document provides guidance as to how to ensure this issue is being considered by all those responsible for managing the estate and providing services.
