Councils face many challenges as the UK experiences more extreme weather events, and the implications of our changing climate where related risks have become increasingly pronounced. In recent years, some additional funding has been welcomed as successive governments recognise the value of local government in managing these changes at a community level. However, the resources to support climate adaptation mitigations still remain limited, which makes it imperative that councils work with key partners and communities in developing proactive plans.
This paper will explore the different impacts of climate change, with case studies providing evidence as to what measures are working and what further work will be required to ensure we adapt to a new normal.
Adapting to climate change is particularly relevant for those authorities in areas responsible for large stretches of the coastal environmental who face some very specific and unique challenges. Alongside the day-to-day management of keeping areas safe and pleasant for local people, and also as often valuable tourist destinations, coastal areas present dangers from sea defences being breached to unseen environmental hazards. Over many years, these bring risks to the coastline including beaches, wildlife habitats, roads and local assets, alongside of course the devasting impact of homes being lost to coastal erosion and flooding
