South Tyneside Council has reached a major milestone in its construction of 17 new Passivhaus properties, with roofing works now complete and the homes made weatherproof.
The homes are the first in the borough to be built to international Passivhaus standards and consist of two, three and four bed properties.
A range of energy-saving and low-carbon technologies will be incorporated into the homes, including triple-glazed windows, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, battery storage systems, air source heat pumps and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
The council note that Passivhaus buildings typically use up to 90% less energy than conventional buildings, helping to reduce both carbon emissions and household energy costs.
The scheme is intended to support tenants by providing highly energy-efficient homes that can help tackle fuel poverty.
