The Sheffield Climate Investment Scheme could help fund solar panels and battery storage systems for 212 council houses, improving energy efficiency and helping tenants reduce energy costs.
Sheffield City Council is proposing to invest £1.67 million in solar photovoltaic panels and battery storage systems for 212 houses and bungalows. The technology would be installed alongside planned roof replacement works over a three-year period as part of the Council's Solar PV Strategy for Council Housing.
The council says combining the installations with planned roofings works would improve efficiency and reduce the needs for additional scaffolding, surveys and repeat visits to tenants' homes.
The proposal forms part of the council's wider ambitions to improve the energy performance of its housing stock. Recently announced plans could see thousands more solar panels and battery systems installed in order to ensure every council home achieves a minimum Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C by 2030.
The original roofing replacement programme included funding for solar panels at around 20 to 30 properties. The additional investment would expand this to 212 homes that are below EPC Band C and are technically suitable.
The council estimates that the properties could generate around £105,900 per year through the proposed energy tariff arrangement, helping to support future climate investment projects.
