On-street EV charging system trial taking place in Swansea

On-street EV charging system trial taking place in Swansea

Ten households in Swansea have been selected to take part in a trial for an on-street EV charging system, funded by the Welsh Government with support from Transport for Wales. The system allows residents to charge vehicles outside of their homes and on the street, addressing one of the key barriers to EV uptake in residential areas.

The system, as outlined by Swansea Council, is designed to run charging cables from home chargers to vehicles parked on the street via a channel beneath the footways, preventing trip hazards for pedestrians.

Alongside the trial, the council has also expanded the number of fast-charging points across council-owned car parks and on-street locations to strengthen local charging provisions more broadly.

These initiatives provide practical insight into how on-street charging solutions can be delivered at scale, particularly in communities where residents lack private driveways, supporting planning for wider EV infrastructure rollout.
