Local authorities across England are set to receive a significant funding boost to support EV infrastructure. The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed £343 million in capital funding and £37.8 million in resource funding will be distributed through the Local Electric Vehicle (LEVI) fund.
The funding will be allocated to Tier 1 councils, with authorities able to apply up to their set allocation subject to DfT-approved delivery plans. The allocation model has been designed to reflect local need and existing progress by prioritising areas with lower levels of current chargepoint provision, higher numbers of households with off-street parking and greater deprivation and rural characteristics.
Funding calculations consider existing charging infrastructure, deprivation and rurality indicators, alongside the estimated number of vehicles without access to off-street parking.
Alongside this capital funding, a Capability Fund will provide additional support for councils to build internal capacity. Funding through this programme will be weighted towards areas with the highest proportion of residents dependent on public charging infrastructure.
This update reinforces the central role of local authorities in delivering the UK’s EV charging infrastructure, particularly in supporting residents who cannot charge vehicles at home. As the transition to zero-emission transport accelerates, investment through the LEVI fund is expected to help ensure that charging infrastructure is deployed more equitably across communities in England.
