On Wednesday 27 May 2026, Ofgem announced a 13% increase in the energy price cap from 1 July to 30 September.
The uplift, driven by higher wholesale gas prices linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, will see the annual bill for a typical dual-fuel household rise from £1,641 to £1,663 under updated consumption.
Electricity prices are expected to increase more modestly than gas, with bills rising by around 5% compared to gas bills, which are rising by 24%.
For local authorities, the increase is likely to add to existing financial pressures, including higher operating costs for buildings and services on variable tariffs.
Ofgem has reiterated that households should explore options such as switching tariffs or payment methods to manage costs, while suppliers are expected to provide support for those struggling with bills.
