Zero-emission buses have reached their highest ever market share in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting the growing demand for sustainable public transport.
New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that 37.3% of new buses registered from January to March 2026 were zero-emission.
While the breakdown of vehicle types has not been published, Electric Drives assumes that the majority of these zero-emission buses are battery-electric following many councils’ limited up-take of hydrogen buses.
With zero-emission buses now becoming an increasingly common feature across UK fleets, councils remain central to implementing charging infrastructure, upgrading depots and supporting the practical delivery of bus services at a local level.
