APSE Energy Webinar – Accounting for Nature: Measuring Carbon Sequestration from Green Assets

APSE Energy is hosting a webinar with the Hertfordshire Climate Change and Sustainability Partnership (HCCSP) to explore how local authorities can account for the carbon sequestration value of their green assets in emissions reporting.

As councils work towards net zero, many continue to face residual emissions despite significant carbon reduction efforts. While green assets such as parks, woodlands, grasslands and wetlands already remove carbon from the atmosphere, there is currently no nationally recognised methodology for consistently quantifying and reporting this contribution. In response, East Herts District Council commissioned HCCSP to develop a practical and transparent approach that could support annual emissions reporting and help establish more robust net emissions baselines.

In August 2026, HCCSP launched its Green Asset Carbon Sequestration Tool, enabling local authorities in Hertfordshire to estimate and report the carbon value of their green assets in a consistent and evidence-based way.

During this webinar, Helen Burridge, HCCSP Manager, will demonstrate the tool and share insights from its development, including:

• Why green asset sequestration should be considered in local authority carbon reporting
• The methodology used to calculate carbon sequestration, building on work developed by the Welsh LGA
• How the tool works in practice
• Key assumptions, limitations and data requirements
• Lessons learnt
• Opportunities for wider adoption across the local government sector
