Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a key consideration in planning and development, creating both responsibilities and opportunities for local authorities. With the right approach, councils can harness BNG to deliver long-term economic gain as well as the more well known environmental benefits.
This session will explore how BNG can support local authorities to generate additional income through the strategic use of council-owned land – to be paid the value created – within the policy context of delivering on climate targets, improving community wellbeing and supporting nature recovery. We’ll walk through practical steps councils can take to embed BNG effectively and highlight the wider value it brings beyond compliance.
BNG in this context is essentially about enhancing the biodiversity on land that the developer owns.
