Leisure provision has been badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst we now have the go ahead for re-opening, public anxiety remains significant and social distancing means that many facilities will struggle to operate viably
The current financial structure is broken, built on the desire to save cost, further reinforced by austerity measures. Council funding has largely been replaced by a reliance on gym memberships. As a discretionary service, it is unlikely we will be first in the queue for further central funding.
This seminar explores the baseline of Covid-19 2020 and seeks to define a pathway forward to a new ‘normal’ where physical activity is seen as core to tackling obesity and health and wellbeing, where access is available to all and funding sustainable into the future. A huge challenge, but one that we can’t escape.
