Elected member development

For more information about elected member development, please click here for new flyer.

What is on offer for elected members?

APSE has designed a comprehensive range of skills workshops offering elected members a choice of personal development in the following areas:

Elected members and the 3rd sector

Central government is encouraging local authorities to involve 3rd Sector organisations in the delivery of services.

This newly developed workshop looks at what is meant by the “3 rd sector” and how elected members need to respond to this challenge

Partnership work

APSE through partnership work with CLES is offering a 2 day event:

APSE in conjunction with CLES are also able to offer a range of bespoke courses on member development such as ‘‘Introduction to Public policy’’ and ‘‘How to engage the community.’

What further choices are available?

APSE is happy to create bespoke solutions for individual councillors or groups of councillors from political parties, plus any of the development topics above can be tailored to suit your specific knowledge or authority requirements.

Who will deliver the workshops?

All sessions are delivered using our 'knowledge bank' of people i.e. those who are able to deliver the key messages for councillors from years of experience as elected members, council leaders and public policy experts.

Do the sessions fit in with elected member commitments?

APSE is able to offer members the choice to attend sessions on any of the following basis:

What are the costs of holding an event in my authority?

Sessions delivered in-house to APSE member authorities are charged at the cost effective rate of £799 per day* for up to 20 councillors to attend.

If you require any further help or guidance on elected member development, please contact Jan Kennedy, Principal Trainer APSE training on 0161 772 1810 or email jamzzone@apse.org.uk. Jan will be able to provide details of the types of packages on offer or help local authorities develop their own training and development requirements.
