Coaching and mentoring
The challenge
Coaching and mentoring are increasingly recognised as playing a crucial role in employee development. It is acknowledged by many authorities that their services could thrive if they offered some form of coaching and mentoring to employees. Local authorities need to develop staff as they lose valuable skills through staff loss over the coming months.
Our expertise
Many APSE associates are accredited coaches and experienced mentors. They understand the difficulties that officers and elected members face when being asked to take on new responsibilities at short notice, or when a job role changes and expands.
More information on the skills of our associates can be found by clicking here.
Our approach
The mentoring options available can include a buddy system, group mentoring, one-to-one relationships, and mentoring for specific skills or roles. There are also options for leaders and executive members. Coaching typically is a series of 4 – 8 sessions to develop a certain skill. Some of the sessions may be telephone sessions which cut down on overhead costs. Mentoring work tends to be rather more long term as there is more of a focus on developing a working relationship with the mentee.
Training for wider groups of staff is supported by APSE’s training arm, lifelong learning and development.
Quotes / facts
Mentors maintain confidentiality and are excellent listeners. They have a non-judgemental approach and maintain an objective outlook. The coach and mentor will advise rather than tell and always has the 'mentee's' best interests at heart they are also excellent at responding skills.
